Do I need Building Consent to renovate my Bathroom or Kitchen?

The rules around what can be done without building consent have recently changed and it has allowed more types of work to be done without consent. This is great as it makes bathroom and kitchen renovations more affordable.

Remember that all changes and improvements to your home must comply with the Building Code regardless of whether a Building Consent is required. Some situations do require a building consent, for example moving structural walls, adding additional units (a toilet for example) or converting part of a bedroom into a bathroom or ensuite.
